My Demon Lover (1987)
"A monstrously funny romance."
Rated PG-13 / Color / 90 Minutes
Love, true love especially, is very hard to find. No one knows this better than Denny, a pretty young gal that has gone
through one terrible relationship after another. (Being named after a restaraunt chain could be the cause.) After her latest
boyfriend leaves her (for throwing him a birthday party) and ransacks her apartment, Denny is even more downtrodden
than ever. Eventually her paths cross with a homeless street musician named Kaz who has some bad luck of his own. You see,
every time Kaz becomes sexually aroused, he begins morphing into a demon. Ever since he made out with a gypsy's daughter, he's
been inflicted with this curse, and it really puts a damper on his relationship with Denny.
Things take an unsuspected turn when Denny is kidnaped by a nerdy barfly named Charles who turns out to be "The Mangler,"
a serial mauler that has been terrorizing the local female populace of New York City. Kaz and Denny's hot Latina friend, Sonia, chase after the
maniacally geeky Charles to his castle in Central Park (wait, huh?!) and attempt to rescue Denny from being "mangled." To save
his girl, Kaz has a quick make-out session with Sonia and fully demons out. Demon Kaz flies to the rescue of his cute girlfriend,
but wouldn't you know it, Charles is a demon too. In the end, Kaz (nearly) sacrifices himself to defeat Charles, and
simultaneously breaks his own demonic curse. Realizing that they can now do the wild thing without
Kaz growing wings, claws, and horns, the two young lovers rush off to have lots of sex, ending the movie on a nice happy note.
My Demon Lover is a fun little b-flick that has romance for
the girls, and monsters and goofy sex jokes for the guys. The makeup and prosthetics work in the film is surprisingly good
and Kaz looks pretty darned cool once he's in full demon mode. Along with a catchy soundtrack, and a lot of wonderful
overacting by stars Scott Valentine (yes, that Scott Valentine) and Robert Trebor (who most of you may know from his
role as Salmoneus on Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules: The Legendary
Journeys), this movie is a fun way to kill an hour-and-a-half. My Demon Lover
is currently out of print and can only be obtained on used VHS tapes, but here's hoping that it makes its DVD debut
in the very near future.
I was pleasantly surprised by My Demon Lover, so I am not ashamed at all
to grace it with:
